This class will present an introduction to Asia-Pacific competitiveness analysis, focusing on important theories of international competitiveness and their strategic implications. The theories range from classical theories such as Adam Smith’s absolute advantage to more recent theories such as Michael Porter’s diamond model. This class also incorporates the theoretical advances beyond Michael Porter such as the double diamond, the nine-factor model, double-diamond-based nine-factor model for analyzing national competitiveness. In addition to the theoretical extensions, we will present practical applications of these models at different level of analysis. In addition, over decades of export-led growth, Asia-Pacific countries have generated not only impressive records of GDP growth and trade, but also international competitiveness, which has structurally transformed their economies with various degree of success. We will introduce Balassa’s (1979) revealed comparative advantage (RCA) formula to examine the relative export performance in these countries. The course has two objectives: the first is to let students understand the definition of competitiveness and what are the strategies to increase competitiveness for a country; the second is to provide students with a number of workhorse models useful in competitiveness analysis. | ||||||||||||
